
Koko History
Koko town is home to Nana Olomu, the popular merchant chief of the Niger Delta. He was a very prominent Itsekiri personality who traded with the British as the Governor of the Benin River. He settled with his family in Koko, where he built his new palace. This palace is now known as the Nanna Living History Museum, Koko. As a result of this, the town is a major tourist destination with a lot of tourists visiting the Nanna Living History. Koko town is one of the major towns in the Niger Delta region with a rich history and is known for its unique cultural heritage, natural resources, and vibrant economy
Koko People
The people of Koko are known for their rich cultural heritage, which is deeply rooted in the tradition of the Itsekiri people. The town has a number of festivals and cultural events that are celebrated throughout the year. One of the most popular festivals in Koko is Neville’s Day celebrated by the Nanna family of Koko to mark the return of Nanna from exile.

Koko, the Local Government Area Head Quarters of Warri North is situated up the Benin River 30km West of Sapele (Location Coordinates 50 31’N, 50 45’E). Koko town with an estimated population of over 300,000 has a rich history and is inhabited mainly by the Itsekiris, one of the major ethnic groups in Delta State. The town was a major trading hub for goods such as palm oil, rubber and timber. Koko town is also home to a number of traditional crafts such as pottery, weaving, and woodcarving. It is bordered by Edo state and Ureju, Ajoki, Ajogbodudu towns.
Delta Special Economic Zones(Koko FTZ)
Koko Free Trade Zone, is located about 20 miles (35 km) from the port city- Sapele in the Delta State. The zone has a land allocation of (2,200) hectare with a sea port (to be upgraded) within the zone. The project is intended to support the goals of the F Federal Government’s Nigerian Gas Master Plan under the Gas Based Industrialization Program (GBIP). The GBIP is intended to collect and transport natural gas from numerous locations throughout Nigeria to a number of Industrial Parks owned and operated by various investors in partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (“NNPC”). In line with this goal, the main target sectors for the zone are gas, oil refining, and related sectors, such as petrochemicals, fertilizer, steal metal, plastics, ceramics, pharmaceuticals etc. some other target sectors include tourism, hospitality, Community service amenities such as healthcare facilities, regional skill training centers, schools, and residential housing will be targeted as well.. The port which is in the Delta Ports Complex is growing in importance with considerable development planned. A bar across the river mouth is to be dredged to 10.0m, as is the channel up to the port. Traffic figures: Approximately 17,000t of cargo handled annually. Load line zone: Tropical. Max size: Largest vessel handled: LOA 140m; draught 7.3m.
Raw Materials
Crude Oil, Natural Gas, Palm Oil, Rubber, Cassava, Fish Products, Pork/Pig Products, Plantain, Maize Etc. The Zone’s Management has engaged a company to begin the master plan work, the survey and environmental baseline studies. Required infrastructure include ports, roads, bridges, potable water, sanitary waste water, storm water sewers, electrical power generation and transmission, piping right of ways, storage tanks, fire station, etc. The zone has an existing port on the site but it needs to be upgraded to fit in to the latest technology of Ports.
Proximity
The NPA Koko is 5mins drive to the Koko Free Trade Zone, 2hrs to the train stations at Warri (Ujevwu), Abraka and Agbor respectively. 2hrs to Warri Airport, 3hrs to Asaba Airport and 1hr to Benin Airport.
Benefits Of Locating Your Investment In Koko Free Trade Zone
Koko and its environs are deposited with huge volume of natural gas (associated gas) and non-associated gas (dry gas). The closest flow stations to the Free Trade Zone is the Oki-Oziengbe flow station about 7km from the Zone; we equally have the Pologbene and Tonjor flow stations about 15km and 20km from the Zone. They are all own by Enageed Resources Limited a subsidiary of Sahara Energy Group of Companies. They are currently producing over 6,000 bopd from the two Wells in the Oki-Oziengbe flow station; also, there’s ongoing field development and upgrade of the Oziengbe flow station to handle up to 30,000 bopd and between 30-40 MMscf g/d. Seplat Energy Joint Venture with NPDC owns the OML4, 38 & 41 and are about 25-35km from the Free Trade Zone. The OML 4 facilities has the capacity of a 60,000 bopd and a gas flow station of 465 MMscf g/d Associated Gas (’’AG’’) compressors.
The OML, 38 which is closer about 25km from the Zone has four (4) producing fields on the block. These fields are Amukpe, Okpohuru, Orogho and Ovhor flow stations. Also, two other discoveries from the block but not in production yet are the Mosogar and Jesse fields.. The OML41 are three (3) producing block namely Sapele, Sapele Shallows and Ovhor. The facilities on the block include a flow station with 60,000 bopd capacity, and a 60 MMscf g/d NGC owned Gas Compressor Station.
The Koko town is also the administrative headquarters of Warri North Local Government Area and it is loaded with abundant natural resources especially in petroleum and natural gas reserves. The volume of gas deposit around the ecosystem has the capacity of sustaining any high intensive users of gas (60MMscf g/d -120MMscf g/d) and it is sustainable for more than 50 years.
